REZULTS


 

The project aims the development of new knowledge in the field of advanced material processing using innovative processes, the friction stir welding (FSW) and the elaboration of integrated, ecological technologies, for priority sector applications (aeronautics and air transport, surface transport).

The friction stir welding on which the project theme is based is a recent development of special interest in the scientific world being present in the research programmes of the main research institutions in Europe, Japan , USA .

Based on the world  level of  knowledge in the  field, the project focuses on the research of the non-conventional process of joining by friction stir welding, modelling the integrated system, thermal processes, residual stresses and strains, characterization of welded joints under the aspect of mechanical characteristics, of fracture  behaviour, fatigue, creep and  corrosion, development of specific methods for non-destructive  examinations, elaboration of the welding process monitoring system and its automated control, elaboration of new methods to modify the  superficial properties of materials (structure, grain, hardness), respectively to eliminate superficial material defects (cracks, pores) using the FSW process, study the performances of FSW new welded structures  for top  applications (such as frames of high speed trains, plane structures,  new material automobile components, high performance ship sections, light bridges). The whole research programme is based on the use of advanced materials as aluminium, magnesium alloys and titanium alloys, composite materials, and complex structures from extruded light alloys.
